
Phineas Gage was an American railroad worker. In 1848, an explosion jammed an iron rod completely through Gage’s head. Although he miraculously survived, damage to the brain changed Gage from a reserved, well-mannered man to an ill-tempered one.

An early QWERTY typewriter, circa 1872. Before, typewriter keys were arranged in two rows, alphabetically. However, this caused “S” and “T” (a very common letter combination) to be situated next to each other, often causing the typewriter to jam. Christopher Scholes then rearranged the keys so that popular letters were placed far away from each other, and more closely to less popular letters.
