If you look to the right of the picture, the empty pedestal is where a statue of his grandfather, Louis XV, once stood.

This portrait of Marie Antoinette and her children was meant to help her reputation by portraying her as a motherly figure. The original painting had Marie’s youngest daughter, Sophie, but the queen had it redone after the baby’s death, which is why the cradle is empty.
